Water Quality along the Androscoggin River

In the Fall of 2004, students in DeWitt John’s Environmental Policy and Politics researched the role of industrial dischargers in terms of impacting the water quality of the Androscoggin River.  As part of a service learning project for the class, students looked at six topics:

  • The role of the DEP in the regulation of the Androscoggin River
    • The regulatory process of setting standards,
    • Modeling inputs of phosphorous into Androscoggin River
    • Trading pollution credits as a strategy to reduce phosphorous
    • The history of regulation along the Androscoggin
  • The role paper mills
    • The role of the International Paper mill in Jay in impacting water quality
    • The economic role of the paper industry in Maine
    • International standards for paper mills
  • The role of environmental NGOs in the regulation of the Androscoggin River – Maine Rivers, Natural Resources Council of Maine, and the Androscoggin River Alliance
  • The role of the local communities along the river
    • The role of public waste water treatment plants and their impact on water quality
    • The perspectives of communities along the Androscoggin River
    • The link between recreation, economic development and water quality.
    • The role of the fishway at the FLP dam in Brunswick

Each group of students researched their topics, interviewed stakeholders and summarized their findings in a poster.  The information created by the students was used as part of the public participation process in establishing TMDL (total maximum daily load) standards for the Androscoggin River and in the formation of the Androscoggin River Alliance.
