Translation
The military is a dao of deception. Thus when able, manifest inability. When active, manifest inactivity. When near, manifest as far. When far, manifest as near.
Annotations
The opening line of this passage is one of the most famous in the Sunzi and has occasioned considerable criticism from the Confucian tradition. For a discussion of deception, see "The Sage Commander in the World" section of the essay "The Sage Commander," pp. 97-99 of the book The Art of War.
