    Annotations

The Yinqueshan text was accompanied by a wooden board listing thirteen chapter titles. However, not all of these are legible, including the title of this chapter. The present title, "Ji," comes from the Wujing qishu 武經七書 text traditions established under imperial sponsorship in the eleventh century. The Shiyijia zhu strands of the received text call this chapter Shiji 始計, "Initial Appraisals," in order to insure that all chapter titles are a uniform two characters in length. The single-word title is preferable according to the two basic criteria of text criticism, in which less consistent and shorter texts are deemed earlier.
