They were musk-oxen… The ones before me were plump and rotund with the luxuriant vegetation of the little meadow spot in which I had found them; they were just shedding their heavy winter coats of wool… [after hunting,] I went back to Astrup [with the defeated game]. I found him as well as the dogs nearly wild with excitement. At my first shot, he had climbed out of his place of concealment to watch the affair, and already knew my good fortune.
