The team and their dogs preparing to leave
“I found, on looking up the valley, that my old friend the Inland Ice was evidently preparing its usual reception for me; the leaden-grey clouds massing above it giving every indication of an approaching storm. Curiously enough, both in 1886, when I went on the Inland Ice, and twice again this year, when I climbed the ice-cap, I had been met by furious storms, but eventually everything had turned out well, and so I accepted this as a good omen... Carrying everything to the ravine, the sledges were loaded there, and we began the transportation from the ravine to Cache Camp at the edge of the ice, two and one-half miles from camp and 2525 feet above sea level.” - Robert E. Peary in Northward over the “Great Ice”, published in 1898
