Although not as famous as Peary’s trip to the North Pole, the 1891 expedition marked Peary’s first foray into northern Greenland and started his career of Arctic exploration. During the 1891-1893 expedition, Peary, accompanied by a stalwart party of six, not only proved that Greenland was an island, but also laid the foundation for further work. During this expedition, Peary made a hazardous boat trip to McCormick Bay, established a homestead in northern Greenland, visited several of the Greenland islands, and conducted basic anthropological research about the people of Greenland. Peary also made his famous "White March"-- a dangerous trek across the unpredictable inland ice. In this section, quotes are taken from Peary's book Northward over the “Great Ice”.
