The Kite in icy water

“The master of the Kite, a steam seal of 280 tons, was the late Captain Richard Pike, a famous arctic skipper and one of the best of ice navigators… Captain Pike and his crew numbered fifteen persons, making a total of thirty-one souls who had to be packed away in the very snuggest of quarters in the cabin berths, deck-house, and forecastle. The Kite was a staunch, strong vessel well-adapted for the voyage, with a steaming power of seven knots. She had been thoroughly overhauled and additional cabin accommodations put into her for my party.” - Robert E. Peary, Northward over the “Great Ice”, published in 1898
