Havana is the political and cultural capital of the Cuban island. It has approximately two million inhabitants and it is an industrial and tourist center of much importance in the country. Some of this city's peculiar characteristics are the architecture and the nightlife. Certainly, no other symbol of the capital is more representative than the Spanish colonial architecture, with exuberant forts and cathedrals almost five hundred years old. But current activities are also quite attractive. Although the government controls excessive commercialization, Havana retains a lively tourist district full of night shows where any visitor can have fun in a safe and friendly environment. Neither its violent history nor the difficult economic situation impedes the Cuban people's cheerfulness. Those who find difficulties frequently develop creativity a lot, and Cuba is a testimony of that.
