Polar Pathways: Robert E. Peary's Arctic Expeditions

1893-Portland: Scenes of Boyhood

“The Falcon… steamed through the magnificent seaward gate of Portland harbour, past the familiar scenes of my boyhood, and up to her berth at Custom-House Pier, amid the shrill screaming of whistles and tug-boats darting here and there. Only a day could be spared here to give old friends and acquaintances a chance to see the arctic ship... The one night in Portland was taken advantage of by the city government to give the party a farewell banquet, and by at least one of the departing expedition that banquet was most deeply enjoyed and appreciated.” -Robert E. Peary, Northward over the Great Ice, published in 1898
