The burros that Peary brought to the arctic
For his 1893 expedition to Greenland, Peary experimented with taking more animals in addition to the dogs. He wanted to know how different animals would aid him during his arctic work. The menagerie follows:
“…the six dogs, Pau, Lion, Ahngodoblaho first and second, Merktoshar, Panikpah, my noble assistants on the “White March”, and companions through the three months’ lecture tour… the carrier pigeons which were to carry messages through the White North; and last the queer little ragged-coated, long-eared, pathetic eyed burros that had come from far-off Santa Fe to serve as material for a somewhat novel experience in arctic methods.” - Robert E.
