Annotations

The Yinqueshan text begins with a dot at the head of an unbroken bamboo strip, clearly indicating the start of a chapter. There is no "Sunzi said" here, nor on the similarly well-preserved strip that begins chapter 6. However, the other chapters whose chapter head is identifiable contain all or part of (or leave space for) that three-graph invocation of the patriarch of this military lineage. Perhaps the present lack is the result of a loose textual practice. Or perhaps there is an intentionality here that remains somewhat opaque.
