    Translation

As for method: First, measure length. Second, measure volume. Third, count. Fourth, weigh. The fifth is victory. Earth gives birth to length. Length gives birth to volume. Volume gives birth to counting. Counting gives birth to weighing. Weighing gives birth to victory.

    Annotations

The sequence here is from the two-dimensional, length, to the three-dimensional, volume, and on through counting (which is done in integer units) to weighing (which is done in fractions as well as whole numbers). These calculations lead to victory.

As with dao, above, this di or "earth" is not limited to any of the more concrete usages the text evidences elsewhere, such as "terrain" or "territory." It is, instead, the ground of all of them.
