見	勝	不	過	眾	人
jian	sheng	bu	guo	zhong	ren
see	victory	not	exceed	many	people

之	所	知	非	善	者
zhi	suo	zhi	fei	shan	zhe

也	戰	勝	而	天	下

見勝不過眾人之智非善者也戰勝而天下曰善。。。

Shiyijia zhu Text

見勝不過眾人之所知非善之善者也戰勝而天下曰善非善之善者也故舉秋毫不為多力見日月不為明目聞雷霆不為聰耳

Translation

In seeing victory, not going beyond what everyone knows is not skilled. Victory in battle that all-under-heaven calls skilled is not skilled. Thus lifting the down of an autumn leaf does not mean great strength. Seeing the sun and the moon does not mean a clear eye. Hearing thunder does not mean a keen ear.

Annotations

This passage contains the one difference in wording between the A and B versions of the text. Whereas A reads "zhong ren zhi suo zhi," B has "zhong ren suo zhi."

The received text says "is not the most skilled" (shan zhi shan zhe). Although these words are obscured on the A text, there is room on the strip only for "shan zhe," "skilled."
