SER vs. ESTAR

TWO WAYS OF BEING IN SPANISH

ser: soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son

Uses of SER (essence):

1. to identify or define: ¿Qué es esto?

2. with de for origin, material, ownership: Es de Cuba.

3. for essential, defining qualities: El agua es líquida.
(including pobre, rico, joven, viejo.)

4. for time, dates, and quantities: Hoy es jueves.

5. for impersonal expressions: Es bueno tomar agua.

estar: estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis están

Uses of ESTAR (state, station):

1. to express location: Está en Lima.
(BUT ser for event location: La clase es allá).

2. for states/conditions or a change in a characteristic: Estoy bien.

3. for actions in progress: Estamos comiendo.

Some adjectives have different meanings when used with the two verbs:
estar listo/a
ser lista/o		 to be ready (state)
to be bright (defining quality)		 ¿Estás lista, María?
María es muy lista.
estar aburrido
ser aburrido		 to be bored (state)
to be boring (defining quality)		 Estoy aburrido con esta novela.
