Viewing Russian characters

In order to properly view the Russian language portions of this site, you may need to configure your computer.

Macintosh:

If you are using a Macintosh, you will need to install the Cyrillic Language Kit. The language kit is an integral part of Mac OS 9, but does not come preinstalled on your Macintosh. You will need to custom install the language kit components from the OS 9 CD that came with your Macintosh. Previous versions of the operating system did not come with the language kit on the OS or system software installer cds; instead users had to purchase the language kit separately. Once the appropriate language kit has been installed, you will need to restart your machine. Default fonts/settings will then take effect so that when you view these pages you will see the correct Russian characters.

Windows 95/98 and 2000:

When the operating system is installed, default fonts are assigned to the Cyrillic character encoding. If your computer does not properly display the Russian characters when trying to view them in Netscape or Internet Explorer, you may need to install the multi-language support component off of the installation cd.

Audio

Many questions within the units include pronunciation of various words and phrases as well as feedback in the form of audio clips. The clips are .mp3 files and can be used with various plug-ins, including QuickTime. If you get a broken symbol you will want to configure your machine so that the audio controls load directly onto the screen. Both browsers may prompt you to download the appropriate QuickTime application which includes the player and the plugin.

Netscape 4.7x:

Open Netscape.
On the Edit menu, select Preferences.
Under Navigator, choose Applications.
Scroll down and look for MP3 audio file.
This should be handled by the latest QuickTime plugin.
If after scrolling through the long list of applications you do not see the mp3 option, you will want to create a new one.

Click on the new button beneath the list of applications. A box will appear asking for description, mime type, and suffix for the file type. In the description box, type in MP3 audio. In the MIME type box, type in audio/mpeg3. In the suffix box, type in mp3. Then select the QuickTime plugin from the drop-down menu next to the plugin radio box to handle the .mp3 files. Click ok.

After configuring your browser, return to Grammatushka and reload the page with the audio clips. You may need to close the browser and restart.

Internet Explorer:

Open Internet Explorer.
On the Edit menu, select Preferences.
Under Receiving Files, choose File Helpers. The list of applications that your browsers uses will appear on the right of the preferences window.
