Mendoza Gallery

H. Mendoza and Son are first listed as doing business at 4A King-street in The Year’s Art 1883. The first exhibition of works in black and white took place in 1884, and by 1886, as noted in the Times, “The little gallery in King-street is now annually made the home of a collection of drawings in black and white.” (“Mr. Mendoza’s Gallery,” Times, 23 November 1886, 6) These exhibitions featured drawings made for illustrations, and included work by Alma Tadema, Hubert Herkomer, and Frederic Leighton. The gallery was also sometimes called the “St. James’s Gallery (I. P. Mendoza).”
