Victorian London : Mapping the Emergence of the Modern Art Gallery

Carlton Galleries

An advertisement for the Carlton Gallery in the Connoisseur in October 1903 encouraged visitors, “If you are in London at any time, and are interested in fine Old and Modern Pictures and Antique Furniture, try and find the Carlton Gallery. It is somewhat difficult to find, but it is worth your while to find it.” The proprietors are listed as “Claude and Trevelyan,” names which appear in the exhibition catalogues and on private view invitations for the Gallery as well. In addition, a Mr. E. Trevelyan Turner is listed as the manager of the gallery in the catalogue for The Winter Exhibition 1902-1903 (London, 1902). Earlier exhibition catalogues listed the proprietors as “Borgen and Turner” (Catalogue of the exhibition of L. Raven Hill’s Work (London, [1895?]).

In the early twentieth-century, Claude and Trevelyan published “A Guide to the Carlton Gallery.” In the introduction, they explained, “The object of this little book is to bring to the notice of the reader the four cleverest Artists of the day.” In addition to profiles of Edward Tayler, E. F. Wells, Lynwood Palmer, and Gregory Robinson, the volume included press notices and short essays on “The Knowledge and Appreciation of Art,” “The Art of Restoring Pictures and Engravings” and “Copies and Reproduction of Pictures,” giving advice to readers and advising them of the services the Carlton Gallery could provide.  In addition to selling modern pictures, they also bought and sold old masters, and old and modern engravings; cleaned and restored paintings, engravings, and antique furniture; provided valuations of pictures; and manufactured frames.
