Cathance Watershed Project
|
The Cathance (pronounced kat'-antz) watershed in mid-coast Maine drains generally southward through the towns of Bowdoin and Topsham before joining the tidal waters of Merrymeeting Bay in Bowdoinham. The Cathance Watershed Project is a collaborative effort among the Cathance River Educational Alliance (CREA), Bowdoin College, Mount Ararat High School, and the Town of Topsham to collect basic water-quality data on this previously little-studied watershed.

During spring semester 2008, members of Environmental Geology & Hydrology at Bowdoin College sampled and analyzed water-quality data from 9 sites within the Cathance watershed, and obtained first-ever (we believe) flow measurements in the watershed at Cathance Falls. Sampling is continuing in summer 2008 with the involvement of CREA intern Eric Berube and environmental-leadership students from local high schools.
