Lewiston - Bates Mill - The Eulogy of Benjamin Bates

The Bates Student Eulogy:

A eulogy of Benjamin Bates was given by Bates College President Cheney. This primary source document explained Bates' family values and religious ideals and how these values translated into his business in the mills. He started working in Boston at the age of 21 in a mercantile and climbed the ladder to a higher position. Bates then moved to Maine and saw the Androscoggin River and decided it would be a good spot to harness energy from the water. Bates built up the water power company in Lewiston and then built his own mills.

Questions for this document:

  1. What factors led Benjamin Bates to develop his mills on the Androscoggin River in Lewiston and Auburn?
  2. How did Benjamin Bates early life and family values affect his actions in business?
